SD Guthrie’s Data Team in Digital has been hard at work on an exciting new tool: Data Navigator, a powerful data catalog that centralizes data search and access. Our Digital Comms team recently took part in an onboarding and User Acceptance Test (UAT) for the Data Navigator project, led by Irfan, our Data Lead. Here’s what we discovered and why we’re excited about this tool.
A Clearer Path to Data: Goodbye to the Search Struggle
Previously, it wasn’t always clear what “data” was available within SD Guthrie. While we knew the data existed across the organization, finding out where it was stored, who owned it, or what it looked like was often challenging. This lack of visibility often hindered deeper analysis. However, with Data Navigator and its Data Catalog, we have transformed how we interact with our data.
While Data Lake, a centralized repository that stores large volumes of raw data—is critical to our data infrastructure, the Data Catalog enables everyone to search within the Data Catalog to see, within seconds, exactly what datasets are available throughout the organization and request it from the right person who manages or owns the data rather than manually tracking down datasets. The Data Catalog offers a simple, accessible view without needing direct technical access to Data Lake itself.
You can quickly find which datasets are available and access valuable details about each one, like its type and definition. Equipped with metadata, the data catalog will give you clearer insights into each dataset—its purpose, description, and content—empowering faster and more accurate searches.
A Sneak Peek: Testing Today to Transform Tomorrow
Currently, the Data Catalog is being tested with specific user groups, but we’re eagerly looking forward to the full launch planned for Q1, next year. This tool promises to transform how we discover and use data, opening new possibilities for collaboration and insight across SD Guthrie.
